Santa on the move
This carving was a true labor of love—my first attempt at creating a figure with movement. I sculpted a Santa walking through the snow, pulling his sleigh behind him, skis on his sleigh and a bag full of presents. The process was both challenging and rewarding, pushing me to capture the energy and motion of Santa in a way I’d never done before. Inspired by a coloring book illustration, I wanted to bring that image to life, giving Santa a sense of movement as he trudges through the snow. While it was a tiring task, the joy of seeing this dynamic piece come together made it all worth it. I’m excited to share it with you!

Timeless Holiday Drive
I started with two separate blocks of wood—one for the car and one for the tree. The idea was simple enough at first: a nostalgic, old-style car carrying home a fresh-cut Christmas tree, much like the cherished holiday scenes in storybooks. But bringing that idea to life took a fair amount of thinking, planning, and careful handwork.
First, I sketched the rough shape of the car onto the wood, keeping the design in mind: a rounded body, prominent fenders, and a cozy cabin reminiscent of the vintage blue car my grandpa used to drive. Then came the painstaking task of carving—slowly removing material, refining each curve and contour, until the car began to look just right. I painted it in that familiar bright blue, adding smaller details like the headlights, wheels, and windows.
Next, I carved the tree from another piece of wood, shaping it to resemble an evergreen wrapped and ready for the holidays. I wanted it to look slightly rustic, so I kept its carved texture visible before giving it a festive green coat. Tying it to the car roof with twine complete with a dusting of faux snow—brought the scene together and gave it the final holiday touch.
Throughout the entire process—from planning the shape to painting and finishing—I put a piece of myself into this little wooden display. It’s more than just a seasonal decoration; it’s a memory of my grandfather’s beloved blue car, a tribute to the joy of bringing home a Christmas spirit, and a reminder that with patience and creativity, simple materials can become something truly meaningful.
